The Implications of Smart Meter Technology

Smart meters installed by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) have caused a wide range of controversial issues. Essentially, smart meters measure electricity input into residential households. Whether smart meters should be used is highly debated, partly because of concerns about privacy and security--the meters could provide crucial information into what customers are doing in real time and make homes vulnerable to break-ins and theft. The smart meters provide a breach in privacy for many home owners. However, some communities have allowed residents to decline the installation of smart meters. If civilians choose to opt out, they will be required to pay monthly fees. Even with this option available, many PG&E costumers still do not choose to opt out, it is simply not great enough of a concern for the hassle. As smart meters become more and more widespread, the issues of privacy will be sure to arise.
